Cooper K-Brands Limited (CKL) has opened a KES 700 million factory in Tatu City, joining more than 50 other companies that have chosen Tatu Industrial Park for their businesses.
The launch is a key step for CKL towards its corporate goal of enabling Africa to be a global leader in food production. The opening of the new plant comes at a time when the government has prioritised manufacturing in its Big 4 Agenda.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mucai Kunyiha, Group Managing Director at CKL, noted that the factory is aimed at meeting the nutritional needs of livestock in Kenya. “With the launch of the new factory, the company has expanded its capacity and capability to manufacture and improve Maclick, our flagship product, and other nutritional supplements,” said Kunyiha.
The factory, which sits on 5.7 acres, can produce two tons of product per hour from the automated Buhler plant fitted into a 36.5 meter tower.
In line with Tatu City’s strategy of generating 30MW of solar power from the industrial park, the CKL facility is fitted with a 200-kilowatt photovoltaic rooftop system that is capable of powering up to 50 per cent of the factory’s daytime needs.
Stephen Jennings, founder and CEO of Rendeavour, Tatu City’s owner and developer, underscored the importance of collaboration in powering Africa’s future. “Tatu City and Cooper K Brands share the vision of Africa as a global leader. We both recognise that Africa is fertile with possibility, and all the continent needs is a strong spring of investment and she will be well on the way to leading the world in achieving the sustainable development goals,” said Jennings.
Industrial occupants at Tatu City enjoy the benefits of operating in a special economic zone such as reduced corporate tax, and exemption from VAT, stamp duty, and export and import duty. Tatu Industrial Park provides businesses with wide roads for large vehicle reticulation, electricity supply from a dedicated sub-station, ready sewerage and stormwater drainage, and water supply from a 10-million litre reservoir.
Over 2,000 students are currently being educated at Tatu City, within walking distance of more than 5,000 homes under construction or development. Tatu Industrial Park features more than 50 companies, and completed infrastructure includes 20km of tarmacked roads, as well as power, water and sewerage.
